Faces of Sabah

Faces of Sabah

Faces of Sabah

A girl at the vegetable market in Rapau, Sabah. The image was shot on the way from Kota Kinabalu to the Porin Hot Springs near the foot of Mt. Kinabalu. Sabah on the north tip of Malaysian Borneo has it’s wealth of impressions from lush jungles to the mighty Mt. Kinabalu and the white sands of Sipadan, but the people are what leaves the most lasting impression. For the image I was hoping to do a Steve McCurry here, one should always look to the Great for inspiration.

Image: ISO100 with aperture f3.5 at 1/800 sec with focal width at 200mm (400mm eqv.) shot with an Olympus E3 and Zuiko f2.8-3.5 50-200mm

Jan Ivar is my hardest, but also my most just, Critic. The kind of feedback he gives pushes me forward. For this image, he didn’t fancy the burnt out part of the girl’s hijab. So I did another verion, this time in Aperture and dropping Photoshop completely. You can see the Aperture version below, together with the original image before any processing was done. There are strenghts and weaknesses in all versions and other options are there to try out. But I think Jan Ivar this time got the better of me with his suggestion to do something with the burnt out hijab.
