Unisex Enlightenment

Unisex Dignitary

Unisex Dignitary - who would have though? ©2011 Geir Ertzgaar

Well, who would have thought. Tell me you always thought that a buddha always had to be a man. But is reaching Enlightenment a gender-regulated achievement? Thought not? But why then do we conceive of Buddha as a man? Don’t we all need to become buddhas to reach enlightenment? Maybe those who sculptured the figures of Wat Preypadoav and any other pagoda in Cambodia are wiser than us? Why genderrize faith?
Anyway, whether a male or a female, or maybe neither or both, there’s a connection between this image of stone and the photographer. Or maybe even between the unisex dignitary and the observer – you?
